About BASH

Bay Area Sacred Harp (BASH) exists to promote Sacred Harp and shape note singing in the San Francisco Bay Area. All events are open to the public, free of charge, and require no prior experience or skill. Song books are always available to borrow. BASH is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, EIN 45-1174818.

Statement of Purpose:
The specific purpose of BASH is to sing, teach, and raise awareness of community-based shape note music, particularly the Denson Sacred Harp, by holding small and large singings and engaging in other and community-based educational, training and outreach activities. BASH serves to uphold the Sacred Harp traditions of hospitality and inclusivity.

Statement of Community:

Membership

Members provide valuable input and service to the organization. Member privileges include receipt of membership emails, participation in business meetings, and the right to vote on the election of board members, and the approval and amendment of bylaws. Each member shall have one vote. Anyone willing to fulfill the responsibilities of membership shall be given the opportunity to become a member. All memberships shall have the same rights, privileges, restrictions and conditions.

A member shall be any person who:

  • supports the accepted statement of purpose;
  • has attended two small or large singings sponsored by BASH within the previous year;
  • has asked to be added to the Membership Roster and email list; and
  • considers the San Francisco Bay Area their primary residence.

BASH conducts a membership drive in the months leading up to the Annual Meeting. Join the email list to stay updated.


Board of Directors

BASH is governed by a 3-member Board of Directors, each serving two-year terms, with a two term limit. Directors are elected by members at the Annual Meeting. The following singers currently serve on the Board of Directors:

Leah Coffin, President (term expiring 2024)
Joel Chan, Treasurer (term expiring 2025)
Lindy Groening, Clerk (term expiring 2025)
