Palo Alto All-Day Singing

Saturday August 26, 2023
10:00 AM – 3:30 PM

Unitarian Universalist Church
505 E Charleston Rd.
Palo Alto, CA 94306

You are cordially invited to the 11th annual Palo Alto All-Day Singing
on Saturday August 26 10AM – 3:30PM, and the half-day Marian Bush Memorial Singing on Sunday August 27 from 1 – 4PM at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Palo Alto. Registration opens 9:30AM on Saturday, and 12:30PM on Sunday. We’ll be singing from the 1991 Denson edition and loaner books will be available for those attending in person.

Both singings will be in the covered patio at the rear of the church. It’s a 20’x30′ space, entirely open on two sides, with an open 21″ clear story window along the long western side. Ventilation is excellent. The roof is peaked 12′ in the center, helping contain the sound. It’s
shaded by two large Stone Pines and a Cyprus tree.

On Saturday only, there will be a potluck dinner on the grounds from 12 – 1 PM. The food will be arrayed on tables along the walkway across from registration and a power strip will be available for crock pots. We’ll be using the Church’s plates, cups, and silverware, and have permission to use the kitchen to clean up. Please bring plenty of food to share. Piazza’s market is available across the street for any last minute purchases.

Masks are optional, but recommended. Negative rapid Covid-19 tests are not required, and vaccination status will not be checked.  However, the Church has a policy that anyone on its grounds must have received at least one Covid-19 vaccination. If you’re feeling under the weather or unvaccinated, please take advantage of the online options.

Contact Anne Caswell for more information.

ONLINE OPTIONS

If you can’t attend in person, please consider attending via Zoom both
days. As a Zoom participant, please mute yourself when singing due to
latency. The page number of each song will be provided in the chat.
All are free to send in song requests via chat. We’ll keep a list so those present in person can fill requests they like.

For you audiophiles, we will be using two cardioid condenser microphones in the NOS configuration, through a 24 bit audio interface, to provide full fidelity stereo sound, best experienced on headphones.

On Saturday, the Zoom Meeting is: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/84675245980

On Saturday you may also participate by Jamulus!  There will be four
cardioid directional microphones above the center of the square,
pointing at each section, each with it’s own channel.  You can adjust
the mix to your liking.  For example, to face the Tenor Section, you’d
pan Treble hard left, Bass hard right, and center the Tenor and Alto,
fading the Alto to taste. You’ll also hear other people singing along
online, and can set their individual levels and position them from left
to right in the mix.

The server’s address: jamulus.bayareasacredharp.org Enter this in the
“Server Name/Address” field of the “Connection Setup” window.

New to Jamulus, or don’t know where to find your ping rate or adjust
your sound input level?  Please arrive well before 10:00AM to get set up and to optimize and adjust your sound for the singing.

You will need a PC/laptop with an ethernet connection (sorry, no phones or WiFi connection) and you must be using earbuds/headphones when you join the session. This will protect everyone else from the squealing feedback that can happen if you don’t.  It’s important to note that to sing in time with everyone else you need to listen to your voice returned in the headphones.  This isn’t hard for delay times less than 25 ms, but it gets progressively harder to do as it gets greater than 50 ms. Jamulus displays the delay time on the bottom left of its window.  If its value is greater than 50 ms, you might want to consider muting yourself so you don’t have to worry about your timing.

Having fun?  Mark your calendars:  our regular hybrid/online 2nd and 4th Sunday singings continue 1-3PM starting Sunday 9/10.
